Case Study: Moodi, a Snipcart E-Commerce Landing Page

For this short case study, we interview Karol Hotár, a versatile freelance developer. In the past ten years, he's been all over Europe, coding & designing from the UK, Italy, and Slovakia. Web development started as a hobby for him but quickly became a full-time job. He's worked on all sorts of client projects: full-stack development, web design, marketing campaigns, and so on.

He's also developed e-commerce projects ranging from plug & play solutions to more custom-built systems with Laravel. But as a freelancer, his time equals money, so he's been attracted to Snipcart's promise of short integration timeframe.

For other professionals who, like him, value their time, Karol recently released a large "UI kit" called MOODI. The package includes 300+ pre-designed elements & 22 templates.

In there, he offers a beautiful Snipcart-ready e-commerce template. It features a nice, full-page product details overlay, and a cart nested at the right side of the screen. It's a cool customization of our product and a nice starting point for developers who wish to fast track a full Snipcart integration.

In this post, we're going to discuss his experience building the template.

Here's hoping the interview encourages you to try decoupled e-commerce or to build your own Snipcart template, like our friends at CloudCannon did. :)

Snipcart integration: Technical interview with Karol

Do you have experience with e-commerce in general? If so, which tools have you been using the most in your workflows?

I've tried a few different approaches & solutions for e-commerce in the past years. Most notably:

  • Custom development
  • Nette Framework
  • Laravel
  • Open Source
  • WooCommerce

How did you stumble upon Snipcart in the first place?

I was Googling around for an e-commerce solution that would be flexible yet quick to implement, in order to save me some time on projects.

There’s a plethora of solutions and tools to handle e-commerce projects. Why did you choose to build a theme that uses Snipcart?

Why? Well, because, after reading the documentation for a few minutes, I was already able to integrate Snipcart into a test website. So I picked it because it was simple, fast, secure, and customizable. I also liked that I could do free testing as much as I wanted without the limit of something like a 30 days trial.

What kind of projects or tools do you think will be a good fit for developers using your theme?

Since this template also comes with a UI kit of 300+ custom elements, I'd say it could suit many different projects. The static e-commerce theme itself would be easy to integrate into any developer's favorite CMS. Plus, it's fully responsive.

How long did it take to fully integrate Snipcart into your MOODI theme? Any cool stuff you’d like to highlight?

The integration of the modal cart and dummy product took me maybe 10 minutes or so? Since the template is just basically a well-crafted demo of a store, I only used one product in it. As for the shopping cart customization itself, maybe two days including testing. I basically edited the Sass files and added some other custom classes & styles to fit my template.

Were our documentation & our support helpful?

Very helpful!

The documentation is quite useful, and for small projects, it's just a really easy integration. If you can get by with a few lines of JavaScript, I think Snipcart is also good for projects with bigger scopes. Plus, the API documentation & methods are easy to understand.

What could we improve to make Snipcart an even better e-commerce solution for developers & merchants?

Maybe add a custom templating engine like Mustache for email customization?

We'd like to thank Karol for taking the time to answer our questions! You can follow him on Twitter, or on his upcoming website. It's always super awesome for our team to see developers using our product for their initiatives. If you need to kickstart a web project with templates & elements, we invite you to have a look at his MOODI UI kit on ThemeForest. :)

If you'd like to learn more about how Snipcart works, head over to our documentation. We also have other interviews with developers & agencies who adopted our product into their e-commerce workflow. Many of them are now on our partnership program.

Liked this post? Take a second to share it on Twitter. All of us (Karol & Snipcart) would really appreciate it. We'd also love to hear your thoughts and questions on the integration itself below!
